waste management in UNSOS

Waste management in the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) has been a significant focus, with efforts to improve  waste management practices and environmental impact. UNSOS has been developing its waste management plan since 2018,  aiming at source reduction and maximizing waste recovery through recycling. The Mission has become self-reliant,  with most non-recyclable and non-hazardous waste incinerated within its facilities. UNSOS is also a pioneer in implementing centralized waste  management yards, alongside other peacekeeping missions, to streamline waste disposal and recycling processes.   The United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) is mandated to provide logistics support to ATMIS uniformed and civilian personnel,  which includes life support and medical infrastructure. This support extends to the provision of waste management services in Somalia.  UNSOS has sought expressions of interest from competent and qualified companies for the provision of waste management services,  including waste collection bins, materials for medical waste disposal, and the design and construction of waste collection points and waste management yards.   In addition to the efforts made by UNSOS, the Department of Operational Support (DOS) is implementing a six-year strategy on environmental management, aiming to achieve maximum efficiency in the use of natural resources and  minimize environmental risks. This includes the implementation of wastewater and solid waste risk assessment methodologies  to ensure regular risk assessments and prompt corrective actions. The efforts of UNSOS and the broader United Nations in waste management in Somalia are part of a comprehensive  approach to reduce the environmental footprint and ensure responsible mission deployment.
